Position Summary

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (Industrial Hygiene) will support the SDSU Environmental Health and Safety department with ensuring compliance in all areas of Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Safety at SDSU, including but not limited to the following elements: water intrusion/mold assessments, indoor air quality assessments, asbestos/lead/crystalline silica program management, chemical exposure monitoring, and noise exposure assessments. In addition, the EH&S Specialist (Industrial Hygiene) will assist in the following program areas: medical surveillance program management, safety training, job hazard assessments, workshop safety inspections, personal protective equipment management, job hazard analysis, and other assigned Environmental Health & Safety related tasks as needed.

The EH&S Specialist (Industrial Hygiene) will collaborate with Environmental Health & Safety staff in developing policies, procedures, and training necessary for campus compliance and best management practices per federal, state, and local regulations. In addition, the EH&S Specialist (Industrial Hygiene) will provide support with assessing campus compliance with applicable health and safety regulations.

This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.

The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Environment Health and Safety department is responsible for development and implementation of programs aimed at protecting the campus community and providing compliance with numerous federal, state, and local regulatory statutes. This department reports to the Senior Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health or Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related STEM field.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in industrial hygiene, environmental control, occupational safety, or other general health and safety disciplines.

Key Qualifications

  • AHERA Asbestos Building Inspector certification is preferred.
  • AHERA Asbestos Contractor Supervisor certification is preferred.
  • CDPH Lead Inspector Assessor certification is preferred.
  • 40 HAZWOPER certification is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

Anticipated hiring range: $65,000- $74,000 annually
