SUMMARY Controls and extinguishes fires, protects life and property, and maintains equipment of Hot Springs Village by performing the following duties. Must insure and protect complete confidentiality of departmental matters.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

1. Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls. Follows the direction of the incident commander, and depending on type of fire, directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire. Be familiar with all types of fire and how fire reacts to different conditions.

2. Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings or to assist individuals from burning structures.

3. Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance.

4. Protects property from water and smoke by use of waterproof salvage covers, and positive pressure vent fans.

5. Administers first aid and CPR to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.

6. Communicates with superior during fire by portable two-way radio.

7. Maintains apparatus, quarters, building, equipment, grounds, and hydrants.

8. Must stay current on Hot Springs Village Property Owners’ Association policies and procedures, and have a working knowledge of Village streets and building layouts.

9. Attend and participate in all required in house training sessions and attend fire schools as needed to maintain personal skills to the latest techniques in fire suppression.

10. As directed, drives and operates fire fighting vehicles and equipment.

11. Inspects commercial buildings in assigned fire districts.

12. Other duties as assigned by supervisors.

13. Be able to use company-wide software for purchase order requests and for time/attendance.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid Arkansas driver’s license with a clean driving record. Must be able to work on holidays, nights and weekends, attend regularly scheduled fire meetings of 2-hour duration and respond to fire and emergency calls.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.

LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS For new paid firefighter after January 1, 2004, must have or obtain Firefighter I & II within the first year of employment. EMT certification is not required but is a personal advantage. Must complete yearly certified training, meeting the minimum standards as set by the state of Arkansas.

While performing the duties of this job, the firefighter is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The firefighter is frequently required to stand. The firefighter must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the firefighter is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and outside weather conditions. The firefighter is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.

MEAL BREAKS Due to the nature of position, u nless employee is relieved of all duty during a specified lunch break, such break shall be considered an “on duty” meal period and counted as time worked. An “on duty” meal period shall be permitted only when the nature of the work prevents an employee from being relieved of all duty.

ESSENTIAL POSITION Yes. Employee is designated as required to work when an office closing is authorized.
