JOB SUMMARY

The Reproductive Freedom Campaign Organizer will primarily build authentic relationships with community members and relevant organizational partners while working to advance policy changes for people impacted by the fight for reproductive freedom. This position reports to the Director of Organizing and Community Engagement and has a demonstrated and deep commitment to racial justice, reproductive freedom, and the values of the ACLU of Virginia.

This position is based in Central Virginia and will require regular travel throughout Central Virginia and the Northern Virginia Region. Travel to other regions of the state may be required depending on strategic priorities and shifts in the political landscape.

Please note this is a two-year, grant-funded position.

The primary objectives of this position are to work alongside the ACLU of Virginia's Reproductive Freedom Project Team and be the primary lead on providing community-level education on our affiliate initiatives, base-building support around our work, and mobilizing grassroots communities across Central Virginia and parts of Northern Virginia around reproductive freedom and an accompanying state constitutional amendment.

Strong experience in building grassroots volunteer teams and developing leadership among volunteers is preferred.

This is a new position, and the individual hired will be able to assist in the development of the ACLU of Virginia's community organizing and engagement programs.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers;
  • Building volunteer-led action teams;
  • Collaborating with existing community partners and leaders;
  • Actively working to grow the number of our strategic community partners and leaders;
  • Engaging in a wide array of tactics, including lobbying, canvassing, tabling, digital organizing, conducting trainings, and hosting community forums;
  • Working with the Organizing team and the ACLU of Virginia's integrated advocacy Reproductive Freedom Project Team to assist in crafting and implementing strategies needed to advance the organization's reproductive freedom priorities - particularly those strategies and tactics pertaining to community organizing;
  • Collaborating with the Reproductive Freedom Project Team to organize and execute creative actions, media events, and community meetings;
  • Collaborating with the Policy team to lobby relevant state and local officials and other relevant policymakers and their staff; and
  • Collaborating with the affiliate's Communications and Policy teams to develop reproductive freedom messaging and to test this messaging with grassroots networks

Power-Building
  • Develop, maintain, and update regional lists in priority districts;
  • Work with the ACLU of Virginia's Reproductive Freedom Project Team to research and draft campaign materials;
  • Assist in policy research and fact-finding at the grassroots level;
  • Coordinate directly with the Reproductive Freedom Project Team to help craft messages and strategies for media releases, social media posts, email action alerts, and webpage updates/changes; and
  • Work with the Reproductive Freedom Project Team to suggest blog posts and other educational messaging on critical campaign highlights and developments for a variety of audiences

ADMINISTRATION
  • Provide weekly reports and plans;
  • Participate in annual and quarterly planning;
  • Complete timecards and submit expense reports and other administrative tasks on an ongoing basis;
  • Attend and engage in internal staff-wide affiliate programs, meetings and activities;
  • Accurately track all campaign results and analyses
SALARY: $55,000 to $60,000. Grant funding restricts hiring above the maximum range. Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Demonstrated support of ACLU-VA's mission including fighting for racial justice and civil rights issues;
  • At least 2 years of organizing experience leading and executing issue campaigns;
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and move projects forward with independence and autonomy;
  • Self-motivation and ability to work well both independently and on a team;
  • Ability to work with a diverse team on multiple projects with competing deadlines;
  • Experience organizing in but not limited to Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, as well as LGBTQ+, immigrant, and low-income communities.;
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with legal, policy, and communications staff to achieve shared goals;
  • Ability to work irregular hours, attend evening and weekend meetings, and travel in- and out-of-state; and
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation meeting all state requirements

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Substantive knowledge and understanding of reproductive freedom issues, as well as other affiliate priorities, such as criminal legal reform, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ issues;
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic, ASL, or other languages used by impacted communities across Virginia; and
  • Experience working and/or living in communities directly impacted by racial injustice; including formerly incarcerated individuals, are encouraged to apply.
